5 Things Students Can Do On Tallahassee Weekends

By Brielle Olorunda on February 5, 2016

If you’re anything like me, you know that after a long stressful week of school, you’re looking forward to a relaxing weekend filled with pleasant memories and exciting activities. Unfortunately,  it’s often times hard to find something to do in a city like Tallahassee that doesn’t offer much besides being the home for Florida State University.  Luckily for you, I’ve found some breathtaking local spots that are perfect for college students who are looking to have some fun on a budget. Say goodbye to your uninteresting Netflix filled weekends, and say hello to a world of adventure.

1. St Marks National Wildlife Refuge

This refuge was established in 1831 to provide a wintering habitat for migratory birds. This is a perfect spot to come and relax with some friends and family members. The refuge includes coastal marshes, islands, tidal creeks, and more! Feel free to hike, bring a lunch and have a picnic, or even just snap some pictures of some of the beautiful wild life you see while you’re out exploring.

2. The Tallahassee Museum

If you haven’t visited this local spot, you’re in for quite a treat.  This is an extremely affordable place that offers zip-lining, a look into Florida’s best wildlife, and so much more. If you’re interested and taking a trip to the museum, read more about everything this historical gem has to offer .

3.  St Marks Lighthouse

This historical lighthouse has served as a navigational beacon for the military and merchant vessels.  It is an 80 foot tower that rests on a 12 foot thick limestone base. The lighthouse is accompanied with breathtaking views and it’s the perfect weekend activity for an extremely decent price.

4. Wakulla Springs

Wakulla is home to one of the worlds largest and deepest freshwater springs. The springs is home to plenty of wild life such as manatees, gators, and unique birds. Most people visit during the spring and summer so they can enjoy a day of swimming in the springs and soaking up the sunshine.

5.  Lake Ella

Lake Ella is a beautiful park, located right in the heart of Tallahassee. It’s a great park where many people come for picnics, to enjoy a nice walk or jog, or even to just look around at some of the local shops around the lake. Every Thursday they host an event titled “Food Truck Thursday” where local food venders come out to sell some outstanding delicious eats!
