The One Thing You Need To Do This Summer

By Jessica Mahmoud on June 12, 2015

Since it’s summer now, I’ve had some time on my hands. One of the more important things on my list of things to do is look for scholarships. This is mostly because the money I’m borrowing in loans more than doubles now because I’m living on campus.

I’ve personally always found scholarships to be annoying because I always thought of them as contests, especially if you’re not in financial need of one. However, I recently discovered an awesome and fun way to try and win a scholarship AND help make the world a better place: Dosomething.org.

You’ve probably seen it on commericials. I assure you it’s totally fun to get involved in, a fun thing to do when you’re bored, and a way to possibly win some big money for school. After signing up, you just look through the different campaigns and sign up to get involved.

The best thing is there’s no essays! Most of them have the moto of “pics or it didn’t happen.” Check out mine and then go sign up for yourself.

This was from a campaign called “Screen Statements” where you put positive notes with some kind of techy-vibe, like the “#nofilter” part in this one. It was to raise awareness of online harassment. I submitted this a while ago, but they’re still going through the submissions and haven’t announced the winner. I only submitted like three photos though, and since I think they pick at random I feel like I don’t have that good of a chance.

This campaign I completed yesterday. It’s called “Take Back the Streets,” referring to the high statistics of street harassment. As you can see, contestants needed to write “Street Harassment Happened Here” and then a quote of a harasser. The idea is to go where you were harassed, but I wrote mostly on my property.

This is because it’s against the law to “chalk” anywhere. You can also write it on a piece of paper or other medium, but I think chalk is fun. So if you decide to participate, be careful and try and get permission. Someone called the cops on me for this, but it was fine.

Here’s another one with post-its, that I actually had a lot of fun doing on campus recently. I went all around into a majority of the buildings sticking up post-its with positive quotes on bathroom mirrors.

Called “Mirror Messages,” this campaign is meant to just brighten people’s day in a place where low self-esteem often occurs. Unfortunately, MSU’s campus is kind of dead so I’m not sure how many people saw them, but it’s definitely very empowering for others.

As an activist, feminist, and someone who has time on my hands, dosomething.org has let me have some great experiences. Not to mention the fact you can win free money! Check it out for yourself!
